Modern Business Machines (1947)

An intriguing historical film, demonstrating many expensive business machines found in modern offices of the era, including electromatic and Chinese typewriters and machines for filming, stenciling, folding and lithographing. Among the machines shown are Diebold's Flofilm microfiche recorder, the Fileomatic Desk, the Pierce Electronic Wire Recorder, the Soundscriber with plastic disk, the Elliott Stencil Machine with Graphotype machine, the Davidson Duplicator for litho printing, the Davidson Folder for letters, the Varityper, the Autotypist Perforator, the IBM Chinese character typewriter, and speed typist Stella Pajunas, using an IBM Model A Electric Typewriter, who set a one-hour typing speed record in 1946 of 140 net five-stroke words per minute. Bad Luck Blackie (1948)

As the cartoon opens, a little white kitten is being mercilessly tormented by a mean bulldog. The kitten manages to escape, and while hiding for safety behind a garbage can, she is met by a bowler hat-wearing, cigar-chomping black cat, who offers to protect the kitten (his business card reads "Paths Crossed -- Guaranteed Bad Luck"). The black cat demonstrates his skills by crossing the path of the rapidly approaching bulldog, who ends up knocked out by a flowerpot that falls from the sky. The black cat then leaves the scene, but not before giving the kitten a whistle, to be blown in case of emergency.

Techno Cracked

Flip is a lazy frog who just wants to lounge around in his hammock. But being the great inventor he is, he has it rigged up so that another animal below is running on a treadmill which gently rocks the hammock. When his old-lady employer catches an eyeful of Flip is up to, instead of mowing the lawn as he is supposed to be doing, she gives him the business. Flip is not happy. One thing leads to another and he winds up inventing a robot, a machine that will cut the grass for him. That's where the bulk of the cartoon and the laughs begin. The robot is a real hoot, human-like more than anything else. The ensuing battles between Flip and this robot are very good with clever sight gags involving what the robot mows. Good stuff, with another totally-wacky ending that you'd see in an early '30s cartoon.
